GUWAHATI: In two separate incidents in Assam, India, members of two families fell seriously ill after consuming poisonous mushrooms. These incidents highlight the dangers associated with consuming wild mushrooms without proper knowledge and awareness.

In the first incident, a family of five residing in Merapani, located in Golaghat district, experienced severe health symptoms after consuming wild mushrooms. The family members, identified as Junmoni Korua (10), Nimli Korua (48), Raju Korua (27), Savitri Korua (6), and Nagawatia Korua (50), complained of symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, and crushing chest pain. Recognizing the severity of the situation, all five individuals were promptly rushed to the Merapani Community Health Centre for immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, Nimli Korua and Junmoni Korua were reported to be in critical condition.

Similarly, in another incident that occurred in Sapekhati village located in Sonari subdivision of Sivasgar district, eight members of a family fell ill after consuming poisonous mushrooms. The affected individuals, namely Dhaniram Karmakar, Shankar Karmakar, Mamata Karmakar, Hemant Karmakar, Mongli Karmakar, Ganesh Karmakar, Akhil Karmakar, and Parishmita Karmakar, were admitted to Rajapukhuri hospital for medical treatment.

Consuming poisonous mushrooms can have severe health complications and, in some cases, can be fatal. While mushroom poisoning is relatively rare, it is crucial to exercise caution when consuming mushrooms, especially those found in the wild. These incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of proper knowledge and awareness regarding the identification of safe and poisonous mushrooms.

Educating the public, particularly those residing in rural areas, about the risks associated with consuming wild mushrooms is crucial. People need to be equipped with the necessary information to identify safe mushrooms and avoid potentially toxic ones. This can help prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Tragically, last month, two individuals lost their lives in Merapani, a town located in the Golaghat district of Assam, after consuming poisonous mushrooms. Thirteen people from five different families had consumed the mushrooms, resulting in severe health complications for those involved. Among the victims, a woman passed away during the course of treatment. Another individual also lost their life, bringing the death toll to two. The remaining ten individuals who consumed the mushrooms were receiving medical attention in hospitals located in Golaghat and Jorhat.

These incidents emphasize the need for public awareness campaigns, educational programs, and initiatives to ensure that people have the necessary knowledge to differentiate between edible and poisonous mushrooms. It is crucial to promote caution and discourage the consumption of wild mushrooms without proper identification. By doing so, we can prevent such tragic incidents and protect the health and well-being of individuals and families in the region.
